GDH carried out a preliminary site investigation in 2011 and studied the lake in 2013 using archives and publications. It is not classified as having a high GLOF risk by ICIMOD.

The dam is made up of ice from the glacier tip and of its lateral moraines*. The glacier is retreating while being probably affected by a surge phenomenon. As time passes, the ice-dam is loosing height and density. Once the ice dam will have melted, only the two lateral moraines will remain. These moraines need to be fully studied.

The human vulnerability downstream of the lake is extremely high: villages, tourism, agriculture...

As opposed to ICIMOD's conclusions, GDH considers that this lake as a potentially high GLOF risk and that it should be studied further.
